BY 2015 CHILDREN EVERYWHERE CAN BE BORN FREE OF HIV
We have an historic opportunity to change the course of history and usher in a healthy, new Generation Born HIV Free. This goal is now possible because of important scientific advances and many committed partners around the world. Today, 1 in 7 new infections occur when a mother passes the virus to her child. We can get that number to virtually zero, while saving mothers’ lives too.
Over 390,000 babies are born with HIV annually
Currently, 390,000 children are born with HIV each year. While the number of children born with HIV infections is now virtually zero in high-income countries, in many other parts of the world, far too few women are receiving HIV prevention and treatment services to protect themselves and their children. Each HIV baby weighs heavily on the families, the health care system and, ultimately, on the positive development of that country.
Our goals are achievable
Reaching our goal of virtual elimination is eminently achievable. The medical regimen and delivery system models have been proven in the field. Support from within the 22 highest burdened countries is in place. Financial support is well on the way to being fully resourced.
